Multi-disaster drill preps studes
The C. Arellano High School community and its neighboring barangays went through a choreographed motion and heightened survival mode during the first citywide multi-disaster drill conducted by the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, July 2.
Principal Loida Diaz emphasized its importance saying “Mas maraming alam, mas handa, mas ligtas.”
The activity started with an earthquake drill in the morning where the students were told to stay calm and to move fast while applying the “duck, cover and hold” method to avoid falling debris. They were also advised to go to an open and secured area when the alarm and the shaking stopped.
The fire drill began with a simulated fire. Drill masters told the students to stay away from the blaze and to give way for the fire trucks. They also taught some students and teachers the use of fire extinguishers so they could contain small fires while waiting for the firemen.
To add drama, two students acted as injured victims and were given first aid before an ambulance arrived.
To cap the event, a tsunami drill was held in the afternoon. This time, the drill masters directed the students and the school personnel to move to the upper floors of the school to avoid possible big waves.
“The multi-disaster drill is a very good act because we become aware and prepare the students and the whole community on how to response (sic) in case these natural disasters become real,” said Deputy Fire Chief Elmer Malbar.
“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.”
